Author Guidelines

AUTHOR GUIDELINES

The Macedonian Journal of Anaesthesia (MJA) publishes original articles, review articles, case reports, short communications, letters to the editor, and editorials in anaesthesiology, intensive care medicine, perioperative medicine, and pain management.


SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Manuscripts must be submitted through the online system and must not be under consideration elsewhere. Authors must comply with the journal’s ethical and editorial policies.

ORCID iD Policy

The Macedonian Journal of Anaesthesia requires all authors to provide a valid ORCID iD during the submission process. ORCID iDs ensure accurate author identification and support transparency in scholarly publishing.

Submissions without ORCID iDs will be returned to authors for completion.


MANUSCRIPT STRUCTURE

Original Articles: Title page, Abstract (up to 250 words), Keywords, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, Declarations, References.

Review Articles: Title page, Abstract (up to 250 words), Keywords, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, Declarations, References.

Case Reports: Title page, Abstract (up to 250 words), Keywords, Introduction, Case Presentation, Discussion, Declarations, References.

Short Communications: Title page, Abstract (up to 200 words), Keywords, Main Text, Declarations, References.

Editorial: Title page, Main Text, Declarations, References.

Letter to the Editor: Title page, Main Text, Declarations, References.


ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS

All research involving human participants must comply with ethical standards and include ethics committee approval where applicable.

Informed patient consent must be obtained for case reports and identifiable clinical data.


DECLARATIONS

Authors must provide: conflict of interest statement, funding information, and disclosure of any use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools (AI cannot be listed as authors).


LANGUAGE AND REFERENCES

Manuscripts must be written in clear English. References should follow Vancouver style.


TABLES AND FIGURES

Tables and figures must be included in the manuscript file for peer review.

Figures must also be uploaded separately (minimum 300 dpi; JPG, PNG, or TIFF).
Tables must be editable (Word or Excel), not images.


TEMPLATE AND DOCUMENTS

Manuscripts must be prepared using the appropriate journal template.

All templates are formatted according to the journal requirements (Times New Roman, font size 12, double line spacing, and defined margins) and include the required manuscript structure and declarations with examples.

Submissions that do not follow the required structure and formatting may be returned to authors before peer review.

POST-ACCEPTANCE REQUIREMENTS

Following acceptance, authors must complete payment and submit proof.

The manuscript will not proceed to publication until verification by the Editorial Office.

 

Authors should not include statements regarding journal indexing or database coverage (e.g., EBSCO, Scopus, Web of Science). Such information is maintained exclusively by the journal.

Submission Preparation Checklist

Before submitting your manuscript, authors must confirm that:

☐ The manuscript is prepared according to the journal’s author guidelines.  
☐ All authors have approved the manuscript and agree with its submission.  
☐ Ethics committee approval has been obtained where required and is described in the manuscript.  
☐ Informed patient consent has been obtained where applicable.  
☐ All sources of funding have been declared.  
☐ All potential conflicts of interest have been disclosed.  
☐ Any use of artificial intelligence tools has been transparently disclosed.

Editorial

This section publishes editorials written by the editorial board or invited experts.

Editorials provide perspectives, commentary, or discussion on current topics in anesthesiology, critical care, and perioperative medicine.

Editorials are typically commissioned and may not undergo external peer review.

Originial Articles

This section publishes original research articles in the field of anesthesiology, critical care, pain medicine, and perioperative medicine. All submissions must be scientifically sound, ethically conducted, and follow appropriate reporting guidelines (e.g., CONSORT, STROBE).

All manuscripts undergo double-blind peer review.

Review Articles

This section publishes narrative and systematic review articles in anesthesiology, critical care, and related disciplines. Review articles should provide a comprehensive and critical analysis of current knowledge on a specific topic.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses should follow PRISMA guidelines.

All manuscripts undergo double-blind peer review.

Short Communications

This section publishes brief reports of preliminary findings, novel techniques, or concise research results in anesthesiology and critical care.

Submissions should be focused, clearly presented, and of immediate scientific or clinical interest.

All manuscripts undergo double-blind peer review.

Professional Perspectives

This section publishes perspective articles and professional reflections that present expert opinions, emerging ideas, and experiences related to current topics in anesthesiology, critical care, and perioperative medicine.

Submissions may include commentary on clinical practice, research directions, healthcare policy, as well as reports and insights from participation in international congresses, workshops, and professional meetings, including representation in initiatives such as ESAIC activities.

Articles are typically concise and thought-provoking, combining professional experience with relevant context to support knowledge exchange and international collaboration.

Submissions may be invited or unsolicited and are subject to editorial review and, where appropriate, peer review.

Conference papers

This section publishes conference-related manuscripts, including abstracts, full papers, and reports presented at scientific meetings, congresses, or symposia in anesthesiology, critical care, and perioperative medicine.

Submissions may undergo editorial review or peer review depending on their type and scientific content. Authors must follow the journal’s submission guidelines and provide all required declarations, including conflicts of interest, funding, and ethical considerations where applicable.

 

Conference abstracts

This section publishes abstracts presented at scientific conferences, congresses, and professional meetings in anesthesiology, critical care, and perioperative medicine.

Conference abstracts are subject to editorial review and are not peer-reviewed unless otherwise specified. Abstracts should be concise, structured where applicable, and limited to the prescribed word count. Authors must ensure accuracy of the submitted content and provide required declarations where applicable.

Case Series

Case Series present a group of patients with similar clinical conditions or treatments.

Manuscripts should include: Introduction, Case Series Presentation, Discussion, and Conclusion.

Ethics approval and patient consent must be provided where applicable.

All submissions are subject to peer review.

Case Reports

This section publishes case reports that describe rare, unusual, or clinically significant cases relevant to anesthesiology, critical care, and perioperative medicine.

Case reports should provide educational value and include a clear discussion of clinical implications.

Authors are encouraged to follow the CARE reporting guidelines.

All manuscripts undergo double-blind peer review.

Letters to the Editor

This section publishes letters that comment on articles previously published in the journal or discuss relevant clinical and scientific issues.

Letters should be concise, constructive, and supported by appropriate references.

Letters may be subject to editorial review and, where appropriate, peer review.
